His rise to fame began at Atlanta's Laffapalooza Festival. He won the Comedy Central Laugh Riots Competition and earned spots at the Montreal Just for Laughs Festival. His Netflix special DeRay Davis: How to Act Black reportedly crashed the Netflix server twice upon release.

On screen, DeRay has appeared in 21 Jump Street, Barbershop 1 & 2, Scary Movie 4, Empire on FOX, Snowfall on FX, and multiple seasons of Wild 'N Out.
