America is doing the Fourth of July thing at full volume. TIME reported that AAA expected 72.2 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles during the holiday week. That is a lot of people saying they are leaving early, then somehow still sitting in the same traffic as everybody else.
San Jose gets a different version of the holiday mood. CBS San Francisco listed San Jose’s Rose, White and Blue Parade and Festival, the Lake Cunningham Park drone show, and San Jose Giants fireworks as part of the Bay Area’s Fourth of July weekend plans. Basically, the city has options, which is great until your group chat treats options like a constitutional crisis.
The weather is helping too. The National Weather Service forecast had San Jose around the low to mid 80s for the holiday stretch, while a lot of the country was dealing with rougher heat. That means San Jose does not get to use the weather as an excuse. You have to come up with a better reason for staying home.
The San Jose mood this week
San Jose is in that nice South Bay pocket where you can do the outdoor thing, see the drone show, watch fireworks, and still end the night somewhere with a roof and a microphone. It is holiday weekend energy, but with fewer people pretending they love standing in a parking lot for two hours.
Comedy fits the city because the whole place is already built around people explaining things. The difference is, at a show, the person explaining things is supposed to be funny.
