New York City comedy shows are the right kind of plan for this week because America is deep in fall weekender mode. Travel + Leisure reported that 60 percent of travelers are planning short fall trips this year, which sounds like the country collectively realized a two-night escape is easier than pretending a full vacation will magically organize itself.
Locally, NYC is entering the week when Midtown turns into a diplomatic parking lot. NYC DOT named September 21 through September 25 Gridlock Alert Days for United Nations General Assembly week, with Midtown traffic historically moving under four miles per hour. That is not traffic. That is a group project with horns.
NYC is better when the plan has a room
This is the city at its most New York: visitors rolling in, locals walking faster for no visible reason, and every avenue acting like it has a security badge. The move is not to fight the week. The move is to pick a room, take the train, and let somebody onstage say the thing everyone on the sidewalk is trying not to say.
A comedy show gives the night a clean shape. You know where you are going, you know when it starts, and for once the loudest person nearby is supposed to be talking.

Serena Kerrigan

Vidura Bandara Rajapaksa: The Paradise Gothic Tour
Thursday, September 24 at 7:30 PM ET

Chelsea Handler

Beacon Theatre, New York
Chelsea Handler at Beacon Theatre is the big-room pick. It has Upper West Side polish, a little bite, and the kind of night where nobody has to explain why they wanted a real show.
“Thank Comedy It’s Friday” Late Night Stand Up Show
Friday, September 25 at 10:00 PM ET
The Comic Strip, New York
“Thank Comedy It’s Friday” Late Night Stand Up Show is on the NYC calendar, which is already a better plan than letting six people vote on dinner for 40 minutes.

Make the city earn the swipe
New York is never going to give you a quiet week just because you asked nicely. But it will give you rooms where the noise finally has timing.
Pick a show, send the link, and let the subway do the driving. If the world leaders can get a motorcade, you can get a night out.
