Kansas City comedy shows make a lot of sense right now. Halloween is getting the full treatment this year. The National Retail Federation says about three out of four Americans plan to celebrate, and spending is headed for a record. People are buying costumes, candy, and fog machines earlier than ever. That tells you something. Folks want a reason to get out of the house and do something together.
Kansas City already has a reason. The Chiefs are 5-0 after beating the Chargers 22-6, and somehow this city is still nervous about it. That’s the most Midwestern thing ever. You’re undefeated and you’re still bracing for bad news. A comedy show is a nice break from that. Nobody in the room is checking the injury report.
Kansas City is in a building mood
The other big local conversation is the new Royals ballpark planned for Crown Center. The renderings came out with fountains, limestone, and a nod to the old Kauffman Stadium touches, and everybody has an opinion about it. Add the streetcar extension, the Current’s riverfront plans, and a downtown that keeps adding stuff, and KC feels like a city redoing the living room while guests are already in it.
The nights are cooling off too. The first frost of the season was already in the forecast last week, so this is the time of year when a warm theater sounds better than another outdoor patio. Most of these shows are at the Uptown Theater on Broadway, which is one of the best rooms in town for comedy. There’s also a grown-folks night at VooDoo Lounge. Get barbecue first, show up full, laugh anyway.

Matteo Lane at the Uptown Theater is the polished, quick, very quotable pick. Bring the friend who sends you voice memos instead of texts. They will be doing his bits on the drive home.

Dusty Slay at the Uptown Theater is front-porch storytelling with real punchlines, and he has an early and a late show the same night. Do the early one with dinner, or the late one if your group never leaves the house before nine.
